What a beautiful shot. The blue bits (sorry, don't know technical term!) look like little beads.

Very beautiful flower and best shot! It is very difficult about your story to understand.
I will read again later.

What a beautiful photo. Like your story.

It's a great story and I feel a bit the same, maybe it's because we see ourselves as just amateurs. That beautiful flower shot is a long way from being an amateur shot, it is glorious.

You know, I find your blog more inspirational than some of the 'inspirational' blogs that I read. Great post!

jo said...

I have come across that one step further:
"I own you"
Usually with a rather superior expression on their face: meaning 'You stand no chance. I'll beat you without a doubt.'
Have to admit, I don't care for either, but like you say, one has to keep up with the lingo :-)
Lisa, without wanting to sound facetious: you own us with that photo. How can we possibly compete? :-)

Elisa said...

Lisa the flower is very beautiful.. soft and elegant. Sometimes I thought if only the inexperience people don't own what they do but I can see that you are somewhat struggling the same thing. It's normal for people now I realize. And for me the awareness is the most important thing. Something to learn and I hope we can be more confident as we progress. You are very talented you know! :)

Sincerely,
Elisa

flowers in a flower. I really love this shot.

Great thinking about "owning" things. :)

great shot, what a beautiful blue and wonderful detail and great post, I hear those words so many times in this house with two teenagers!

I am going to own the dragonflies today :)
Love your post Lisa and the flower is so delicious looking in your photo!
Have a great Monday!

Anna said...

Lisa, over-the-top, stunning image!!! You totally own this one! Yes indeed, I know that expression. Although you are a teacher, hopefully next time someone asks about your photography, the words will easily flow - "I am a photographer and a teacher". You are an amazing photographer!!!

Nancy @ A Rural Journal said...

Lisa, I guess I'm from the old school -- I consider a photographer as someone who makes a living at photography. Perhaps that mindset is changing. I'm not sure.

Lovely photo -- is that a gazania? :) Very pretty. :)

Jane said...

Absolutely beautiful photo Lisa - you definitely own the great shot on this flower, and you own your camera and your amazing photography work too :-)

Pieces of Sunshine said...

Beautiful photo, I think the way you have caught the light makes it extra special.
You may not be a paid/professional photographer but you could confidently say you are passionate about photography....and flowers. That would hit the spot nicely for both you and the gardener.

texwisgirl said...

fantastic image and a very good lesson in your story. thanks for sharing that.

Rosemary Aubut said...

Gorgeous shot Lisa and yes you do own it!

Henrietta said...

It's a great story and I feel the same, we see ourselves as just amateurs.I don't know where is the line who could be a professional and who could not. I know I could be a professional some kind of photographing but not like in newspaper. I don't even know would I want to be, would it kill the so loved hobby!?! Interesting thoughts....so I'm not owning..what?!
Have a nice week

Rick Forrestal said...

Not familiar with that phrase.
You do own that beautiful photograph, though.

Katie said...

I've had that same question posed to me---it really puts you on the spot, doesn't it? I equate "photographers" to people like Scott Kelby and the like, not to myself, but like you said, you gotta start somewhere and be confident in your abilities, which you have an abundance of.

My husband and kids use that same phrase, "own it"; I smiled when I began to read your explanations of the phrase. ; )

Katie said...

Whoops! Put down the wrong link! Try this again!

Dorian Susan said...

I can't believe you said "no" when someone asked you if you were a photographer. You totally own it-and rock it out as well. Jus' sayin'.....typified by another totally sick flower shot. Legit. Love the sharp focus in the blue in contrast with the softness and glow in the petals. You go girl!!

Roan said...

So the definition of photographer is: "a person who takes photographs, either as a hobby or a profession". After seeing your photographs, I'm declaring you ARE a photographer. I have the same issues with saying I'm a writer. I thought I couldn't call myself a writer until I've been published. So, I wouldn't use the word. Even now that I am published, it is hard to say I'm a writer. Next time, OWN IT!

Roan said...

Oh, and I LOVE the flower.

Pat said...

What a beautiful photo! I love that blue center!

Sall's Country Life said...

AhHa Moment here! Yes, confidence is so important in everything we try to be! Your photography is top notch, so own it Girl!

Good morning, Lisa! Stunning image!

Lisa, you are such a photographer, I can't believe you said no! Great story though. A good reminder. Let's all working on owning ourselves as artists! Gorgeous light on this flower. Just gorgeous.

Linda R. said...

WOW.. Your photo is amazing. I started to think about what you wrote here.. And it seems like most of the time I really don't have enough confidence to OWN anything.. I think I might have to work on that.. Thanks for giving me food for thought this morning..

Hugs, Linda

Lisa - this is beautiful! Stunning color and details!~

gina said...

Lisa, with all your fans telling you what fabulous photos you share here, it is hard to believe that you aren't standing tall and crowing "I am a gifted photographer!" Repeat after me please...."I own it, I own it, I really own it"

Lisa said...

You son has some very wise words. I wonder where he learned this kind of wisdom. ;-) You definitely need to *own* being a photographer. I can honestly say I've never seen a blue center on a daisy-like flower. Uniquely beautiful.

elizabeth said...

This is one of my favorites!!! It really grabbed my attention. Then I read the post and smiled. You are so right - I can't tell you how many times I've been asked "are you a photographer???? and all I do is hem and haw and struggle b/c I feel like I am not good enough yet to say that I am. I need to hold my head up high look them in the eye and say - YES!!! I AM!!!!

Lisa, you "own" every photograph you take. Fabulous! I love the expression. I may start using it and subsequently confuse everyone I say it to :)

Evelyn S. said...

You said you weren't a photographer???? If you aren't, then who is? Of course, I think it's modesty at work. This photo above is amazing! African Daisy? As always, everything you share with us is beautiful, Lisa.

Lúcia said...

That was a very nice story, thank you!
The photo is beautiful!
BTW I learn a lot when I come here. ;-)

Rosie said...

First of all - I LOVE your photo, such wonderful details, amazingl! And then such a beautiful post - that really gets me thinking! I know I would have reacted just like you, maybe I would even have said "oh no, I'm not a photographer, I just like taking pictures"... I didn't know the expression before but now I know I have to own it! Thanks so much for that, Lisa!

Stacey Dawn said...

Great story - but I beg to differ.
YOU are a fabulous photographer who owns her camera, the shots she takes and rocks them every time!!

Misty said...

Great lesson! I find myself choking over those words when someone asks me if I'm a photographer too. I need to own it.

Lui said...

I agree, Lisa.
I am regarded by family and friends as an artist. Yet in the art community here, I am the Curator, an Art Manager, the Cultural Worker, simply because my creatives were rarely publicly exhibited.

You are an excellent Photographer,Lisa, a great Mom, a good Friend and Perfect Host for our creatives every Monday. I am sure there are more titles and roles that we do not publicly OWN/declare simply because it seemed silly to state what we believe to be so obvious.

Indie.Tea said...

On the rare ocassions that I watch a food network show, they use that 'own that' phrase a lot too. It seems very fake-hipster when they do though :)
The shot of the flower is amazing - love the softness about the petals.

Ciao Lisa and great story!I love the pics and also your words!

have a nice and cosy week!

Woof, Lisa!
Don't woofy OWN up to anything or you might get drooly sorry. When people ask me if I am also a photographer dog, I woofy say "nope, the camera did it!"

hootnonny said...

It is my view that you are a PROFESSIONAL photographer (and if you are not selling your gorgeous images, you should be!) Your son has given us all words to ponder! Thanks for sharing them!

love the photo today! lisa, you OWN IT! your photos are amazing!!

bianca snow said...

Lisa you are a wonderful photographer full of knowledge and your own style. However I totally understand how you found it difficult to "own" this title and it's probably just because you see it as something you simply love doing. I also find it very very hard to say that I am a designer out aloud to people and this post made me realise how much it's holding me back. This was exactly what I needed to read today :) Thanks

Barbara said...

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa! If you're not a photographer, then no one is! You OWN that camera, and never doubt it again!

Pradeepa said...

Beautiful flower and beautifully captured.

The macro shot is gorgeous and absolute proof, if proof were needed, that you most definitely ARE a photographer, and a really talented one to boot! Time to start owning it, Lisa! :-)

What a beautiful post and what a gorgeous image...love them both. Promise me that if anyone every asks you again if you are a photographer, don't hesitate one moment, you really do own that camera.

Ms. Becky said...

well here's what I think about the question. do we answer it based on what we "think" or suspect other people think, or do we answer the question based on what WE think, believe, or know? it's a matter of owning our truth, regardless of others' thoughts about it. sometimes that isn't easy to come by is it? I know for myself it is not. thanks for the ponder Lisa. and thanks for hosting TCE each week. it's a blessing. your photo is fab, btw.

Kat W said...

You definitely owned this photo - beautiful!

This is a wonderful post - enjoyable to read and offers a great piece of advice. Thanks for sharing this story & wisdom - I shall go away and think about this some more.

I came across your blog via Elisa at Harmony thoughts. I like your challenge as I like to use my camera to stop and fully be in the moment. I like that you encourage people to take photos from the heart.

Kat :-)

Hi Lisa,

Guess I'm going to have to buy a book about blogging, because I'm not really sure what the Creative Exchange is all about. I'm assuming that the African Daisy above was a shot of yours, and if so, very nice, and that followers of your blog submit a link to be viewed by other followers. Did I get that right?

Somewhat puzzled (but learning),

Mike

Ohhh Lisa, I love that beautiful beautiful shot! WoW! I don't know how you did it, but the lighting is absolutely incredible & I think you 'own it' more than you think you do!!! heheheee =)

Would you be opposed to me making a "The Creative Exchange" badge of that flower pic? I really like the current one, but that shot is, as the kids say, 'Off the hook'! Ok, now, that made me crack up... It's an odd request, I know, & will completely understand if you don't want me to, but I just had to ask. =)

Jennifer@threedogsinagarden said...

Great picture and an interesting set of shots. When does one become a real photographer. After someone hands you a piece of paper saying you are qualified to call yourself a photographer? Experience it seems to me is key. After that confidence is everything.

Stacey said...

lisa, i've had heard the phrase, "i'm going to own that", and i think you own your capture. your shots are a testament to that fact. your son sounds fearless(racing cars...):-). xx

Lesley said...

Lisa, you certainly are a photographer as your beautiful shot above proves!
I've not heard that expression before, except maybe in an American movie or sitcom. I loved reading this thought provoking post.

Connie Smiley said...

Beautiful shot, and great writing. My husband was walking through the room when your flower was on my screen; he sees a lot of photos, but that one stopped him cold!

Funny, but I was asked if I was a photographer the other day and my answer was similar to your! I need to OWN that I'm a photographer too. :)

Sara said...

Absolutely gorgeous flower and you should definitely "own" being a photographer. I guess we get hung up on whether we are earning a living off our photography or not, but an artist can still be an artist without selling any art. I've been trying to say I'm an ameture photographer, sometimes it is hard to 'own' though.

Oh, you so OWN it baby! You just need to "own up" to it! :) I think everyone gets confused with having to have a "degree" in something before they BECOME "it". I asked a FABULOUS painter where he got is degree... and he hadn't. He has painted bishops and politicians - his portraits hang in DC. Believe me, you are a photographer, heart and soul... :)

hello, I should have posted last week.. but wanted to come in and tell you that I have been thinking on your post with your son and the saying of I own that or this.. and ya know.. I think he is right.. if one wants to really advance in life.. one has to "own" that which brings them happiness.. other wise it just sits in the shadows of life.. such as the young lady who asked you if your were a photographer.."OWEN" it my dear.. for yes you are.. as you are one heck of an artiest as well.. soft hugs
